LJ/MBA NULU 5YR WHEATED W63 BOURBON 750ML 2P

Right away I find a lot to love. Jammy fig, caramel, raspberry, plum and cranberry juice jumps out at me.

This glass is incredibly easy going for 121 proof, and ultimately flavorful enough to be nearly double its age statement. Another sip builds in classic vanilla, sugar cookie, soft pretzel bread and a tingle of nutmeg.

The linger is buzzing with vibrant fruit held down by heavy caramel tones. Praline pops up in a sweet surprise long after a sip.

A larger sip and swish elevates lemon zest, vanilla frosting and angel food cake. This glass shows off just the right amount of sweetness without becoming cloying.

It’s my favorite pick of the bunch that stood out from our tasting with Chase in the barrel room. My last sip is bittersweet as cinnamon pokes into the tip of my tongue, forcing me to swallow the last mouthful of liquid gold.

Overall the glass presents lovingly comfortable with a solid array of flavors. The finish is long with subtle citrus-laced patisserie treats.

At first sip I’m overly impressed. I’m not normally a big double oaked fan, but this just lands right away.

Caramel, crème brûlée, light linen and light oak are the initial highlights.

nother sip evolves into chocolate pirouline sticks, molasses and faint salted cashews. The pirouline stick comparison cannot be understated.

um. As I continue through the glass I find hints of cherry, brown sugar and confectioners sugar. My last sip is a solid array of classic bourbon notes.

Overall this is an easy sipper & sure to be a crowd pleaser.

Your classic Cinnamon Toast Crunch note is right there, but this time quite creamy and layered well with vanilla bean ice cream.

kay, what? This suddenly works for me? I like this now? What happened to my palate? The weathered palate can definitely appreciate something as bold as this.

I picture this coming out late into a fire night with good friends over. This one turns their heads and makes them talk about the whiskey again.

It’s big, bold and beautiful despite being a bit one-noted. Another sip confirms this synopsis for my palate. Big spice notes try to squeak out from under the heavy blanket of amburana influence, but ultimately fail to materialize.

Hints of creamy coffee bean can be found in the linger.

A funky floral array displays kindly.

My last sip is solidly potent with cinnamon delivering the strongest, but a sweet coffee cake profile building well.

The finish is long and smoldering. Solid!

Whiskey Type: Finished Straight Rye Whiskey

Mash Bill Percentages: 95% Rye, 5% Malted Barley

Proof: 100.9°

Age: 5 years

Further identification: This is an upcoming barrel pick from Mass Bourbon Alliance in collaboration with Liquor Junction (@LJWhiskeyFamily) out of Reading, MA; expect this sometime in the Winter of 2022. It has a 'distilled in Indiana' statement & it comes from barrel 5019.

Nose :- From a distance I can smell delectable, sugary vanilla frosting wafting off the glass. Raising the glass to my nose I find a bouquet of lovely floral, sweet, traditional rye. It's nuanced with touches of raisin, elderberry, honeysuckle and grapefruit blossom. There's a citrus characteristic that is subdued, but delicious so I find myself digging deep with strong inhales. The nose-feel is incredibly soft, silky, and delicate - though that may have some part to do with the temperature of my whiskey that has acclimated towards something nearing the outside temperature of 57°. A brief swirl of the glass builds out the barrel influence as oak and light caramel begins to enter the mix. Eucalyptus brings just a touch of mint to the experience, though it's layered well with honey, vanilla and crème fraiche.

Palate :- My first sip is so creamy upfront; it's like a mouthful of whipped cream! Cherry immediately follows and slides down my chest like a delicious jello shot. The linger is impossibly long on this sip and it sticks around in fruitful, tasty ways. Strawberry, raisin and raspberry jam all meld very well and feels like there is great continuity from the nose. Another sip and swish shows off bright, zest lemon alongside grape skins and peach. Oh wow... the creamy vanilla bean flavor that rips across your tongue on this is worth every penny of the price of admission. The funky sweetness from the rum barrel are finally starting to shine through later in the glass as well - it took some time to build. My last sip is again incredibly creamy with confectioners sugar, light raisin bread, muddled maraschino cherries and a touch of raspberry. The linger continues on in one constant wave that doesn't change in magnitude but emanates in every direction. Overall this is balanced & elegant.
